East Carolina made 51 percent of its field goal attempts and led from start to finish in defeating North Carolina Central 79-62 Saturday night in Greenville.

The win, which wrapped up ECU's non-conference slate, was the Pirates' second straight heading into their Conference USA opener this week at second-ranked Memphis. ECU beat Coastal Carolina 89-64 Wednesday night.

East Carolina's offensive effort was paced by sophomore forward John Fields and senior guard Cory Farmer with 16 points apiece.

Junior guard Sam Hinnant contributed 11 points and senior guard Darrell Jenkins added 10 points and a school record-tying 13 assists for the Pirates.

N.C. Central was led by senior forward Charles Futrell with a game-high 23 points and junior guard J'Mell Walters with 20 points. Junior guard Bryan Ayala was the Eagles' only other double-figure producer with 10 points.

East Carolina connected on 25 of its 49 shots from the floor, including 10 of 24 (41.7 percent) from three-point range, while holding NCCU to 24 field goals on 55 tries (43.6 percent) and 3 of 9 from behind the arc (33.3 percent).

The victory gives the Pirates some momentum as they turn their attention to the road trip to Memphis for the Wednesday night league opener for both teams. The contest, which may be the toughest game on ECU's schedule, tips off at 8 p.m. and will be televised by CSS.

The Tigers are 13-0 after drubbing Pepperdine 90-53 Saturday night for a school record 40th straight home win.
