CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA —
Virginia got off to a good start Sunday and avoided being swept in a
three-game series with East Carolina by dealing the Pirates their first
loss of the season, 4-2.
Adam Haseley led off the
bottom of the first inning with a double for the Cavaliers. A
sacrifice bunt by Ernie Clement moved Haseley to third and he scored
on an error for a 1-0 Virginia lead.
The hosts added another
run in the first on a dropped fly ball, the second of five errors
for ECU.
Virginia (4-3) extended
its lead to 4-0 with two runs in the third after a leadoff single by
Haseley. He scored on a double by Clement. Clement eventually scored
on a ground out by Pavin Smith.
The Pirates (6-1) scored
lone runs in the seventh and eighth.
In the seventh, Dwanya
Williams-Sutton led off with a double and moved to third on a ground
out by Kirk Morgan. ECU spoiled the shutout bid of UVa's Tommy Doyle
with a sacrifice bunt by Turner Brown that brought Williams-Sutton
home.
The Pirates pulled
within 4-2 in the eighth. Parker Lamm opened the frame with a hit
and went to second on a throwing error. He took third on a ground
out to first by Charlie Yorgen after Kevin Doherty had relieved
Doyle.
Lamm came home on a
grounder to short by Travis Watkins.
Eric Tyler singled to
start the ninth for the Pirates before Alec Bettinger picked up his
first save.
Doyle (1-0) pitched into
the eighth in taking the win. He yielded seven hits and no walks
while striking out two.
Jimmy Boyd (1-1)
absorbed the loss, allowing six hits over seven innings with two
walks and three strikeouts. Three of UVa's four runs were earned.
Freshman Chris Holba
pitched a scoreless eighth for the Pirates.
Both teams struggled
with timely hitting as ECU was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring
position and Virginia was 1-for-11.
