Cavaliers avoid sweep with 4-2 win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Virginia
got off to a good start Sunday and avoided being swept in a three-game
series with East Carolina by dealing the Pirates their first loss of the
season, 4-2.
Adam Haseley led off the bottom of
the first inning with a double for the Cavaliers. A sacrifice bunt by
Ernie Clement moved Haseley to third and he scored on an error for a 1-0
Virginia lead.
The hosts added another run in the
first on a dropped fly ball, the second of five errors for ECU.
Virginia (4-3) extended its lead to
4-0 with two runs in the third after a leadoff single by Haseley. He
scored on a double by Clement. Clement eventually scored on a ground out
by Pavin Smith.
The Pirates (6-1) scored lone runs in
the seventh and eighth.
In the seventh, Dwanya
Williams-Sutton led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out
by Kirk Morgan. ECU spoiled the shutout bid of UVa's Tommy Doyle with a
sacrifice bunt by Turner Brown that brought Williams-Sutton home.
The Pirates pulled within 4-2 in the
eighth. Parker Lamm opened the frame with a hit and went to second on a
throwing error. He took third on a ground out to first by Charlie Yorgen
after Kevin Doherty had relieved Doyle.
Lamm came home on a grounder to short
by Travis Watkins.
Eric Tyler singled to start the ninth
for the Pirates before Alec Bettinger picked up his first save.
Doyle (1-0) pitched into the eighth
in taking the win. He yielded seven hits and no walks while striking out
two.
Jimmy Boyd (1-1) absorbed the loss,
allowing six hits over seven innings with two walks and three
strikeouts. Three of UVa's four runs were earned.
Freshman Chris Holba pitched a
scoreless eighth for the Pirates.
Both teams struggled with timely
hitting as ECU was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and Virginia
was 1-for-11.
The Pirates host Elon at 4 p.m.
Wednesday. The Phoenix swept visiting LaSalle over the weekend to
improve to 3-4.
