GREENVILLE � Freshman Davis Kirkpatrick struck out 10
High Point batters as East Carolina reached the 30-win plateau by topping
the Panthers 7-4 at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Tuesday night.
Kirkpatrick (2-1) worked five and one-third innings. He
allowed three hits, three earned runs and walked four. Ryan Williams went
two and two-thirds innings in relief. Drew Reynolds got the last two outs
for ECU (30-23).
Reynolds also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-4
with a three-run homer.
ECU took the lead in the bottom of the first and stayed
in front the rest of the way. Charlie Yorgen bunted his way aboard in the
opening frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reynolds. Zach
Houchins singled up the middle before Yorgen came home on a bunt by Dylan
Brown.
Houchins had an RBI double in the third for a 2-0 Pirates
lead after singles by Hunter Allen and Reynolds.
ECU picked up two runs in the fourth following singles by
Ian Townsend and Bryce Harman. Garrett Brooks advanced the runners with a
bunt. Townsend scored on an RBI ground out by Allen. Yorgen singled to
center to score Harman for a 4-0 Pirates lead.
High Point (28-20) closed within 4-3 with a run in the
fifth and two more in the sixth.
Reynolds' three-run homer to right in the bottom of the
sixth extended ECU's advantage to 7-3.
The Panthers' Spencer Angelis had a solo homer in the
ninth for the final run in the nonconference contest.
Yorgen and Houchins had two hits each as ECU outhit the
visitors, 10-6.
The Pirates start a three-game Conference USA series with
Texas-San Antonio at home on Thursday at 6 p.m.
