RICHMOND, VA — Virginia
Commonwealth kept East Carolina winless on the road with a 3-0 victory
Tuesday.
The game was originally
scheduled for Wednesday but was moved up a day because of the threat of
rain.
The Pirates fell to 3-5
overall and 0-4 in away games as Daniel Concepcion started for the Rams and
struck out seven over 6 2/3 scoreless innings. Left-hander Logan Kanuik
completed the shutout and picked up a save for VCU (7-1).
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in
the fifth after Tyler Bolton walked Cody Acker. The Rams right fielder stole
second base and scored on a two-out single by Joey Cujas.
That was the only run off
Bolton, who allowed five hits over six innings while walking five and
striking out five.
VCU tallied twice against
Nick Durazo in the eighth after Chris Ayers led off with a single. Ayers'
pinch runner, Alex Gransback, went to second on a failed pickoff attempt and
he moved to third on a single by Bill Cullen. A walk to Matt Davis loaded
the bases before a single by designated hitter Logan Farrar drove a pair for
a 3-0 Rams lead.
The Pirates loaded the bases
in the third and seventh.
Travis Watkins was 2-for-4
to lead ECU's five-hit attack. Drew Reynolds, Ian Townsend and Luke Lowery
also had hits for the Pirates.
ECU will be home to host the
11th annual Keith LeClair Classic this weekend. The Pirates meet Western
Kentucky on Friday at 5 p.m. ECU plays Pittsburgh on Saturday at 3 p.m. and
faces Ohio State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
