C-USA and ECU releases
Catcher Corey Kemp was
named Conference USA Player of the Year and pitchers Seth Maness and
Justin Bristow captured the top freshman and newcomer honors,
respectively, as East Carolina made off with a treasure chest full of
the league's annual awards.
Kemp and Maness were also
named first-team all-conference, as was fellow Pirate Harrison Eldridge.
Bristow was selected second-team all-conference along with teammate
Stephen Batts, an infielder.
Maness and ECU shortstop
Dustin Harrington landed spots on C-USA's all-freshman team.
Tulane's Shooter Hunt
garnered Pitcher of the Year recognition and Rice coach Wayne Graham was
selected as recipient of the Keith LeClair Coach of the Year Award. The
coaching accolade is named in honor of deceased ECU Hall of Fame coach
Keith LeClair.
The honorees were selected
in voting by a panel consisting of the conference's head coaches and
sports information directors and media representatives from each of the
league's cities.
Soon after the awards were
released, word came that Kemp is still in the running for the nation's
premier accolade for amateur baseball players. ECU announced that Kemp
is one of 50 semifinalists for the 2008 USA Baseball Golden Spikes
Award.
