Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is stuck in a verbal quandary over what he did or didn’t say recently to a Syracuse newspaper reporter.

Pitino was quoted in an article by Post-Standard columnist Bob Snyder as saying that ''Conference USA is God-awful. The worst thing about Louisville is it's in Conference USA.''

The former Kentucky Wildcats and Boston Celtics coach has denied the quote to C-USA officials, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.

"He called me today (Monday) and said he was misquoted," said Brian Teter, an assistant commissioner of the league, in a Tuesday story in the Enquirer. "I take him at his word."

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Pitino has also denied making a comment to Snyder implying that Louisville would be in the Jimmy V Classic with Syracuse in two years.

Both quotes were in Sunday's editions of the Syracuse Post-Standard in a piece by Snyder about the looming defection of Syracuse, Boston College and Miami from the Big East Conference to the ACC and Pitino's belief that Louisville would bolt Conference USA for the Big East to fill part of the vacuum.

According to multiple newspaper and online media accounts, Snyder says he wants to put the matter to rest but stands by his quotes.
