Bowl-hungry Bulls trample Pirates
By The Associated Press
TAMPA — South Florida
breathed a bit of life into its flickering hopes for postseason
eligibility at East Carolina's expense.
Andre Hall ran for a
game-high 161 yards and added a touchdown as the Bulls ran over the
visiting Pirates 41-17 Saturday night in the final Conference USA
meeting between the teams before USF's departure next season for the Big
East.
Quarterback Pat Julmiste
threw for 233 yards and ran for another 69 to lead the Bulls, who evened
their record and can keep their slim chances for their first bowl bid
alive by winning at least two of their remaining three games.
It was the second
consecutive win for South Florida (4-4, 3-3 C-USA) while East Carolina
(2-7, 2-5) dropped its second straight.
The Bulls dominated on
both sides of the ball in the first half leading the Pirates 151-24 in
rushing and putting up 254 yards in the half.
South Florida went up 24-3
on its first drive of the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown run from
Hall, who appeared to be trapped and going down in the backfield before
escaping through the middle.
Just as it appeared to be
a rout, Hall fumbled after USF started another long drive, and Jamar
Flournoy returned it 36 yards for an ECU touchdown to cut it to 24-10 at
the end of the third quarter.
Julmiste started the
fourth quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run, but the Pirates came back
with an 18-yard pass from James Pinkney to Chris Johnson to make it
31-17.
The Bulls scored the last
10 points of the game to seal the win.
