Round One in the Books: The Highs and the Lows

STARS

� Caron Butler, Connecticut, scored a career-high 34 points and had nine rebounds as the second-seeded Huskies beat North Carolina State 77-74 in the East Regional.

� Juan Dixon, Maryland, scored 29 points to break the school records for career points and NCAA tournament career points in the Terrapins' 87-57 rout of Wisconsin in the East Regional.

� Dan Gadzuric, UCLA, scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Bruins to a 105-101 double-overtime upset victory over top-seeded Cincinnati in the West Regional.

UPSETS OF THE DAY

� UCLA rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half and then outscored top-seeded Cincinnati 15-11 in the second OT to reach the round of 16 for the fifth time in six years with a 105-101 victory in the West Regional.

� Southern Illinois erased a 19-point first-half deficit and stunned No. 3 Georgia 77-75 in the East Regional. The 11th-seeded Salukis will make their first appearance in the final 16 since the NCAAs expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

SHOT OF THE DAY

Connecticut's Caron Butler made five foul shots in the last 11 seconds to help the Huskies hold off North Carolina State 77-74 in the East Regional. Butler shot 10-for-13 from the field and 12-for-12 from the free-throw line.

STARTS

Texas jumped out to a 23-point lead against third-seeded Mississippi State, but the Longhorns had to stave off a rally before hanging on for a 68-64 win in the Midwest Regional.

STUBBORN 'D'

Pittsburgh held California scoreless for 9{ minutes during a decisive 16-0 run, and the defense-driven Panthers moved into the South Regional semifinals with a 63-50 victory. The Golden Bears made just six baskets in the final 16:40.

TOP TERP

Maryland's Juan Dixon broke Len Bias' team record for career points and also eclipsed Bias' mark for career points in the NCAA tournament after scoring 29 in the Terrapins' 87-57 win over Wisconsin in the East Regional. Dixon has 2,172 points, and 197 in his four trips to the tourney.

SEE YA

Cincinnati, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time, became the first top seed to exit with a 105-101 double-overtime loss to UCLA in the West Regional.

WELCOME BACK

Pittsburgh (29-5) advanced to the regional semifinals for the only the second time in school history with a 63-50 win over California in the South Regional. It's the Panthers' first trip to the round of 16 since losing to David Thompson's North Carolina State Wolfpack in the 1974 regional finals.

WORKIN' OVERTIME

For the first time since 1986, two games in the same tournament have gone to two OTs: Creighton's 83-82 victory over Florida in the first round, and UCLA's 105-101 upset of Cincinnati on Sunday.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Cincinnati's Leonard Stokes scored a career-high 39 points in the Bearcats' 105-101 loss to UCLA in double overtime in the West Regional.
