Kinston Regional
East
Carolina 7, UNC-Wilmington 0
MONDAY'S ECU-UNCW BOX SCORE
KINSTON East Carolina
right-hander Greg Bunn struck out a career-high 11 in eight shutout innings
Monday in East Carolina's 7-0 victory over North Carolina-Wilmington,
sending the Pirates to the super regionals.
East Carolina (51-11) will
play at South Carolina (48-15) beginning Saturday in one of the eight
best-of-3 super regionals. The winner advances to the College World Series
in Omaha, Neb.
Bunn (10-0), the Conference
USA pitcher of the year, allowed two hits and retired the first 10 batters
he faced.
Ryan Norwood had an RBI single
in the third and Billy Richardson hit a two-run double in the fourth to give
the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
The Pirates broke it open with
four runs in the sixth, highlighted by John Poppert's leadoff homer and Jake
Smith's pinch-hit two-run double.
Matt Sutton took the loss,
allowing three runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings for UNC-Wilmington
(40-23).
Editor's note: Of
the 16 regionals, all except the one in Kinston came to a conclusion on
Sunday. Following are capsules of all of that day's games:
Kinston Regional
UNC-Wilmington
4, Tennessee 3
KINSTON Matt Poulk had a
game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help North
Carolina-Wilmington eliminate Tennessee (38-24) in a game that ended around
midnight.
UNC-Wilmington (40-22), which
lost to East Carolina earlier in the day to slip into the losers' bracket,
plays the Pirates at noon on Monday in the regional championship.
Trailing 3-2 in the ninth,
Matt Sutton led off with a single to right. Jonathan Batts followed with a
base hit down the first-base line, moving Sutton to third. Sutton then raced
home on a passed ball to tie the game.
Three batters later, Poulk
drove in Kenny Smith for the winner.
East
Carolina 11, UNC-Wilmington 4
KINSTON Ryan Jones and Mark
Minicozzi homered and East Carolina had 15 hits in the victory.
ECU (50-11), which has not
lost a game in the Regional, faces UNC-Wilmington in the championship
Monday.
The Pirates scored twice in
the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Pirates then sent 10 batters to the
plate and scored six runs in the seventh inning to break it open.
Tennessee 1,
Stony Brook 0
KINSTON Luke Hochevar
scattered eight hits in a complete game shutout and Alex Suarez had an RBI
double to help Tennessee eliminate Stony Brook (29-27).
The Volunteers (37-23) avoided
elimination and faced UNC-Wilmington later Sunday, only to lose.
Kevin Fitzgerald (7-3) allowed
one run in the complete game for the Seawolves.
Oxford Regional
Tulane 12, Washington 3
OXFORD Brian Bogusevic
followed his momentum-changing circus catch with a game-tying single, then
used nifty baserunning to get the winning run home, and Tulane won its
second regional title.
Bogusevic had three RBI to
lead Tulane (41-19), which next plays the Fullerton regional winner.
Leading 3-1 in the second,
Washington (39-20-1) loaded the bases with two out when Kyle Larsen cranked
a drive down the right field line. Bogusevic made a twisting, running catch
to stop the Huskies' potentially game-breaking threat.
That gem seemed to spark
Tulane's offense, which scored four runs in the following half-inning.
Houston Regional
Texas A&m 7, Rice 5
HOUSTON Justin Ruggiano
knocked defending national champion Rice out of the NCAA tournament with an
eighth-inning grand slam that gave Texas A&M a 7-5 victory Sunday.
Rice (46-14) took a 5-3 lead
in the top of the eighth when Matt Cavanaugh and Paul Janish scored on a
single by Adam Rogers.
Craig Stinson, John Infante
and Travis Bartek all singled for the Aggies to load the bases in the bottom
of the eighth. Ruggiano then hit his first pitch from Philip Humber for the
grand slam that proved to be the difference.
The Aggies (42-20) advance to
a best-of-3 super regional next weekend against LSU.
Rice 3, Texas A&M 1
HOUSTON Jeff Niemann pitched
a four-hitter to help Rice force the decisive second game.

Erik Schindewolf scored in the first inning on Paul Janish's sacrifice fly
and Adam Morris scored on a single by Matt Cavanaugh in the second.
Stanford Regional
Long Beach State 8,
Stanford 4
STANFORD John Bowker homered
and drove in three runs, helping Long Beach State beat top-seeded Stanford
and advance to the super regionals.

Arizona, which beat Notre Dame. Troy Tulowitzki and Sean Boatright also
homered for Long Beach State, going for its first berth in the College World

championship.

overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and will host a best-of-3 super
regional next weekend against Vanderbilt.
Oral Roberts (50-11) started
seldom-used Conner Tinkler on the mound. Tinkler came in with just two
starts this season and 16 2/3 innings under his belt. He didn't get out of
the first inning, giving up four earned runs without recording an out.

seven solid innings and Georgia Tech hit two more homers in the NCAA Atlanta
regional final.

10th-inning homer sent Georgia (41-21) to the super regionals, where the
Bulldogs will play Georgia Tech.
Georgia got back-to-back home
runs in the ninth inning from Bobby Felmy and Jason Jacobs off reliever Tony
Sipp to tie it up at 6, inspired after coach David Perno's ejection in the
bottom of the eighth.
The Tigers (39-26) led 6-4
when Perno was tossed for coming onto the field to argue balls and strikes.
Before he left the field he hurled a bucket of balls onto the field.
Clemson 10, Georgia 9
ATHENS Lou Santangelo's
grand slam in the seventh inning capped a comeback from a seven-run deficit
to help Clemson force the decisive elimination game.

the Fayetteville winner in the super regional.

seven earned runs on eight hits in the loss. The Knights (47-18) forced the
deciding game with a 7-5 win earlier in the day.
Central Florida 7, Florida

home run in the eighth inning broke a tie and propelled Central Florida to
the victory, setting up the deciding game.

lose a game in the double-elimination tournament and next play Long Beach
State.

game at 6 in the seventh on a three-run homer by Cody Rizzo. But the
Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Van Houten
scored on Duran's single.
Baton Rouge Regional
LSU 11, College of
Charleston 3
BATON ROUGE LSU starter Lane
Mestepey allowed just three hits, and the Tigers (44-17) won their ninth
straight regional to set up a super regional against Texas A&M.
College of Charleston (47-16)
was making its first appearance in a regional.
Mestepey (6-3) turned his left
ankle jogging Wednesday and missed his scheduled start Saturday. When he
left the mound in the eighth inning Sunday, he got a standing ovation.
Columbia Regional
South Carolina 7, North
Carolina 6
COLUMBIA Kevin Melillo's
two-run homer in the fourth inning put South Carolina ahead for good, and
the Gamecocks advanced to the super regionals against the Kinston winner.
Melillo's blast gave South
Carolina (48-15) a cushion after a series of mistakes let the tired Tar
Heels (43-21) keep things close.
Gamecocks closer Chad
Blackwell struggled in the ninth, allowing three hits and a run. But with
runners on first and second with one out, he struck out Marshall Hubbard and
Sammy Hewitt to get his 17th save.
