Sun Devils, Chanticleers prevail in Tempe

Arizona State 9, East Carolina 6

Jeff Larish hit two home
runs and Jason Urquidez held East Carolina to six hits over six innings
as Arizona State beat the Pirates 9-6 Friday night in the Tempe regional
of the NCAA baseball tournament.
The Sun Devils (35-22)
advance to face Coastal Carolina in the winner's bracket game Saturday
night after East Carolina (35-25) plays Nevada-Las Vegas in an
elimination game.
Larish hit his 18th homer
of the season on the first pitch of the first inning and then followed
with a two-run shot in the sixth after getting hit by pitches in two of
his other plate appearances.
With the two homers,
Larish moved past Barry Bonds into second place on the school's career
list with 47, nine behind Bob Horner.
Urquidez (9-4) allowed two
runs in the first and then retired 13 of the next 15 Pirates to face
him, striking out seven and walking one.
Tuffy Gosewich added a
two-run double in the Sun Devils' four-run second inning.
East Carolina starter T.J.
Hose (7-4) gave up five runs on six hits in 1 1-3 innings.
Coastal Carolina 12, UNLV 8
Aaron Verrett drove in
four runs on a homer, double and single as Coastal Carolina beat
Nevada-Las Vegas 12-8 Friday in a first-round game of the Tempe
Regional.
The Chanticleers (49-14)
advance to face Arizona State in the winner's bracket on Saturday in a
contest that will follow an elimination game betweenr UNLV (34-28) and
East Carolina.
Verrett hit a two-run
homer � his fourth of the season � in the fourth inning and had an RBI
double in a seven-run fifth inning that broke a 3-3 tie. He also singled
in a run in the seventh inning.
Jon Foisy finished with
four hits and Chris Todd had three in Coastal Carolina's 19-hit attack.
Chris Bonnell and Zeke
Parraz each had four hits for UNLV, the Big West Conference champion.
Bonnell slugged a two-run homer in the third inning and Mike Cruz had a
solo shot in the Rebels' sixth inning.
Ricky Shefka (12-2)
pitched 6 1/2 innings to get the win with UNLV starter Matt Luca (5-7)
taking the loss.
