GREENVILLE – A
recent report that East Carolina football coach Skip Holtz interviewed
for the head coaching position at Georgia Tech apparently is false.
According to ECU
athletics director Terry Holland, no school has requested permission to
interview the third-year Pirates coach.
The Northwest
Arkansas Times reported Saturday that Holtz interviewed for the Georgia
Tech vacancy, and that he is now considered a candidate to take over at
Arkansas.
Holland said
Saturday night that he has not been contacted about Holtz’s services.
However, that
doesn’t mean that Holtz hasn’t been contacted through intermediaries, a
practice that Holland acknowledged is fairly common in today’s climate.
That often is the first step in the hiring process, and it is used to
gauge a potential candidate's interest in a job opening.
Holtz has been
linked by media reports to several openings in recent weeks, most
notably the vacancies at Georgia Tech, Arkansas, and to a lesser extent
Duke. He attended Saturday night’s ECU basketball victory over N.C.
State and is currently preparing for the Pirates’ December 23 showdown
with Boise State in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
