Logan exile lifted
Bonesville.net staff report

Interim Chancellor William
Shelton, with the approval of East Carolina University's board of trustees,
will issue a letter to former football coach Steve Logan notifying him that
a clause that was inserted in his dismissal agreement last December barring
him from campus is being revoked.
The letter will extend a
welcome to Logan to visit the campus at any time.
The decision was made in a
regularly scheduled session of the board of trustees that was conducted on
Friday.
The provision, Point No. 5 in a
10-point document detailing Logan's terms of dismissal, had barred
Logan from setting foot on the ECU campus without permission from the
school's athletic director.
Here is the relevant excerpt
from the agreement that will be revoked by the university:
V. Mr. Logan agrees that
he will vacate his office, surrender all University property in his
possession, and leave the University on or before December 8, 2002. He
will not return to the University campus without permission of the
Athletic Director or his designee.
The document was signed on
behalf of ECU on Dec. 7, 2002, by former athletic director Mike Hamrick,
former chancellor William Muse and former chairman of the board of trustees
Charles Franklin.
The restriction required Logan
to seek Hamrick's permission to venture onto campus, including those
occasions when he wished to attend a baseball game. Until his transfer to
Campbell after last season, Logan's son, Nate, was a member of the Pirates
baseball team.
Since Logan's firing, the
leadership positions of ECU's campus administration and athletic department
have undergone an upheaval and new administrators are now in charge of the
school's affairs.
Additional changes may be on the horizon
as search committees pursue their work of helping to identify ECU's next
permanent chancellor and athletic director.
Nick Floyd was named interim
athletic director in August after Hamrick, who was embroiled in various
controversies during his eight-year tenure, sought and obtained the A.D.
position at Nevada-Las Vegas with Muse's endorsement and encouragement.
The following month, Shelton
was named interim chancellor after the sudden resignation of Muse in the
wake of scrutiny over hiring and firing practices and questions about the
manner in which audits had been handled by the university.
James Talton succeeded
Franklin as chairman of the board of trustees in July.
Logan still resides in the
community and has become involved in broadcasting work on both the local and
national levels since being forced from the job he held for 11 year after a
4-8 season in 2002. His teams were 69-58, including a run of 62-43 and five
bowl games from 1994 onward.
The Pirates had earned three
straight postseason berths heading into that final season.
Logan, who has consistently
refused to comment publicly on his firing, has expressed to acquaintances
his continued fondness for the region and partiality for East Carolina
University.
