Coaching searches are
most fluid situations
until the ink is dry on
a contract.
Everybody wants to be
the first to tell the
story. In this age of
technology, the thirst
to be first often makes
for less accurate
reporting.
However, late Monday
night, all indications
were that Rick
Stockstill was ready to
be named as Skip Holtz’s
replacement at East
Carolina.
Stockstill told a
Nashville television
station on Monday
afternoon that he had
been offered the job.
Stockstill also told at
least one person close
to the current ECU
football program that he
was taking the job.
Like Holtz’s decision to
leave for Tampa,
Stockstill had concerns
for his family in this
move. Stockstill's son
Brent is an outstanding
quarterback for a
Murfreesboro area high
school. That’s the same
Brent Stockstill who
flashed the leather for
Overton’s in the
Greenville Little League
during his dad's brief
stint in Greenville on
the John Thompson staff.
Rick Stockstill held the
position of offensive
coordinator for the
Pirates in 1993, during
one of the program’s
bleakest hours. That’s
the one real knock
against this hire.
Stockstill has a great
resume besides that one
lost season at ECU.
Reports are that he
interviewed well, and
that was a key in the
Terry Holland-led
search.
Joe Dubin, a
sportscaster with WKRN-TV
in Nashville, raved
about Stockstill. Dubin
first broke the story
that Stockstill had been
offered the position at
East Carolina. Dubin
said Monday night that
he was “95 percent”
sure that Stockstill
would take the job at
ECU.
Dubin also said that
Stockstill told him that
the former Pirate coach,
Skip Holtz, had called
and sent text messages
to him concerning the
ECU position.
East Carolina brass said
they were still in
“search mode” as of late
Monday afternoon.
The national signing day
is just over two weeks
away so I’m sure both
schools would like to
get this behind them.
Tuesday should bring
answers for sure.
