Appalachian State and East Carolina come into their game at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday at noon (ESPNU) following starkly-contrasting results in their season openers.

The Mountaineers vanquished Maine, a Football Championship Subdivision program, 55-3, in Boone.

ECU traveled to Alabama, No. 12 in this week’s Associated Press poll, and absorbed a 48-10 defeat.

“We can’t wait to be in there Saturday and can’t wait to hear our fan base in there,” said Pirates coach Blake Harrell of the first home game of 2026.

Scouting report

The Mountaineers had over 40 players enter the transfer portal from a 5-8 team in their first season under Dowell Loggins in 2025.

Appalachian received an invitation to the Birmingham Bowl despite only five wins and was on the short end of a 29-10 score with Georgia Southern in the postseason matchup.

“Coach Loggins does a great job,” Harrell said. “They started 4-2 last year. … Obviously, they had a good game Saturday, (647) yards of offense and only gave up 250. Coach Loggins was at South Carolina, the (offensive coordinator). He’s got an offensive background. He was in the NFL for 16 years, was an offensive coordinator in the NFL.”

Defensive connection

Harrell knows ASU defensive coordinator D.J. Smith.

“Good story there,” said the ECU coach. “My first recruiting call when I was at Lenoir-Rhyne was to a guy named D.J. Smith. He ended up playing at App State. … Now he’s the defensive coordinator there.”

Transfer quarterback

Quarterback Malachi Singleton of the Mountaineers was at Purdue last year.  He completed 60 percent of 64 pass attempts for 439 yards with 202 yards rushing in a back-up role for the Boilermakers.

He completed 22 of 24 against Maine for 291 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

“He started his career out of Arkansas, was at Purdue last year and got his first start this past weekend,” Harrell said. “Good player. Can hurt you with his legs as well. There will be some quarterback design run game in there.”

App defensive alignment

Harrell summarized D.J. Smith’s unit.

“Defensively, they’re more of a four-man front,” he said. “They’ll play some single high safety. …

“The guy they kind of look out for there is their linebacker, a kid from Beaufort, South Carolina, Colton Phares.  He had a good game Saturday (sack, interception). He’s preseason all conference (Sun Belt).”

Series

Harrell said the Pirates are well aware of the Mountaineers’ recent domination in the series. ECU has lost three straight since Appalachian moved to the FBS before the 2014 season.

That includes a 33-19 App win in Charlotte in 2021, a 43-28 Pirates loss in Boone in 2023 and a 21-19 Mountaineers comeback win in Greenville in 2024.

ECU had a 16-0 lead in the first quarter in 2024. Joey Aguilar, who continued his career at Tennessee, had two TD passes in the winning rally.

Appalachian leads the series, 22-12. The Pirates won six straight between 1976 and 2012.

ECU connections

Katin Houser and Illinois host Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (Fox Sports 1). Houser, who entered the transfer portal before ECU’s bowl win over Pitt, completed 13 of 17 for 182 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-23 season-opening win over Alabama-Birmingham.

Jake Garcia, who eventually lost the starting job to Houser in 2024, is playing at Furman. Garcia completed eight of 17 for 36 yards in a 56-9 loss at Tennessee. Garcia didn’t throw an interception but was sacked six times.

London Montgomery had three carries for 12 yards for Florida in a 66-21 win over Florida Atlantic in Gainesville.

Yannick Smith had five catches for 107 yards for No. 19 Southern Methodist in a 27-24 win at Florida State on Monday night with a 79-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter.

Incoming talent

Wake Forest transfer Jeremiah Melvin had four catches for 60 yards and a TD for ECU at Alabama.

That exceeded his production of three catches for 39 yards and one TD in limited action over two seasons at Wake.

Ashton Gray (North Texas) and Michael Allen (Marshall) had six carries each at Alabama. Gray netted 17 yards and Allen gained 15.

Harrell indicated that wide receiver Landon Sides (North Texas) may be back from a hamstring injury that kept him from playing in Tuscaloosa.

Receiver Brock Spalding, ECU’s lone returning starter on offense, apparently has not returned to practice. He had a game week injury before the season opener.

Next play, next game

Harrell shared his thoughts on moving forward from the Alabama game.

“If we can go focus on taking steps as a football team, as a football program, we will get better each and every single week,” he said. “I think we can do that. That’s really about life, too. As you go through life, there’s going to be adversity that we face and if we let that adversity kind of sit on us, punch us in the mouth and we don’t get back up, we’re going to have a tough life.

“But if we can get back up and keep on trucking, we’ll be okay. One of my favorite sayings is, ‘Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.’

“It doesn’t matter about the last play. Go attack the next play. Go attack the next game.”
