GREENVILLE — East Carolina had several big innings on Tuesday night in a 14-8 nonconference win over UNC-Wilmington at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates (17-12-1) built an 8-1 lead, were threatened and produced six runs in the eighth inning.
“A six spot,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “Awesome win.”
The Pirates took the regular season series with the Seahawks (18-10), winning both meetings. ECU prevailed, 5-3, in the Port City on March 4.
Grady Lanahan went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs and five RBIs. He had an RBI single to get the Pirates’ scoring started in the eighth.
A single by Colby Wallace scored Lanahan for a 10-7 ECU advantage. Walker Barron walked with the bases loaded for an 11-7 lead. Austin Irby drove in two runs with a single to right. Davin Whitaker’s RBI single provided a 14-7 lead.
Trevor Lucas homered for UNCW in the top of the ninth.
The Seahawks got on the board first with a solo homer to right center by Ryker Galaska in the top of the third.
The Pirates answered with a score-tying clout to right center by Lanahan in the bottom of the third.
ECU scored four runs in the fourth as Whitaker had an RBI single and Lanahan had a bases-loaded double for a 5-1 lead.
Two runs scored on a bunt by Barron in the fifth and the lead grew to 8-1 as Barron came home on a single through the right side by Whitaker.
UNCW battled back within 8-7. The comeback started with three runs in the sixth and continued with three more in the eighth.
Mason Hughes had a ground out, Lucas singled up the middle and Galaska was hit by a pitch for RBIs in the top of the sixth.
Pinch hitter Jackson Hood had a 2-run homer in the eighth and Matous Bubenik hit an RBI double down the left field line to get the Seahawks within a run.
Whitaker had three hits and three RBIs as ECU had a 14-11 edge in hits. Barron had a hit and three RBIs. Jack Herring and Wallace each had two hits with a double.
The Pirates used six pitchers. Gavin Marley (1-0) was credited with the win. Marley went one and one-third innings. He allowed no hits and no runs with one walk and one strikeout.
Alex Bouche got his first save. He went one and two-thirds innings with one hit, one run (earned), one walk and a game-ending whiff.
ECU starts a 3-game American Conference series at home against Charlotte (18-10) on Thursday at 6 p.m. Both teams are 3-3 in league play.
