SAN ANTONIO — Ethan Norby and Joe Webb combined for a shutout as East Carolina took a 3-0 American Conference series-opening win at Texas-San Antonio on Friday night.

Norby (3-1) started and went seven innings. The left-handed junior yielded one hit and three walks while striking out 12.

Webb pitched the last two innings for his first save. He allowed one hit while walking one and striking out one.

The Pirates improved to 16-10-1 overall and 3-1 in the American.

ECU scored one run in the top of the first and added two more in the third.

Braden Burress and Jack Herring drew walks to start the game before the Roadrunners (18-8, 2-2 American) pulled starter Christian Okerholm.

An error loaded the bases and Burress came home on a fielder’s choice by Colby Wallace.

Wallace had an RBI single to right center in the third to bring in Grady Lanahan and a sacrifice fly by Davin Whitaker scored Austin Irby.

Gunnar Brown (2-1) was charged with the loss. Jake Qualia pitched five scoreless innings for UTSA.

ECU had an 8-2 lead in hits as Burress and Wallace each had two.

The second game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. (ESPN+).
