GREENVILLE — Pinch hitter Michael Kalinich led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a solo homer to center to give East Carolina an 8-7 win over Pennsylvania at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday.
The Pirates (12-8-1) took the series with the Quakers (3-10) two games to one.
ECU had to recover from deficits of 4-1 and 7-5 in the deciding game of the series. The Pirates lost starting pitcher Colby Weber and right fielder Jack Herring to injuries during the contest.
“An ugly win,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network.
The wind was blowing out to right field. Each team had three home runs.
ECU took a 1-0 lead in the first when Colby Wallace singled to score Davin Whitaker with two out.
The Quakers went up, 4-1, in the third on a tying homer by Ryan Taylor and a 3-run blast by Qwynn Ahearn.
Left-hander Nick Moran yielded the first homer and Gavin Marley gave up the second after Weber was pulled at the start of the frame with a physical issue.
Herring hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 4-3. Herring came out of the game in the top of the fourth after apparently dislocating a shoulder on a diving catch attempt.
Penn extended its lead to 5-3 in the seventh on an RBI single by Michael Powell.
Whitaker hit a 2-run homer in the seventh to tie the score at 5.
Gavin Degnan’s 2-run homer provided Penn with a 7-5 lead in the eighth. ECU tied the score at 7 with Jeff Sabater coming in on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Wallace.
Each team had 10 hits. Burress and Whitaker had tw0 each for the Pirates.
Brett Antolick (2-1) kept the Quakers scoreless over the last two innings for the win. He allowed three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Nick Newburn (0-1) was charged with the loss.
