GREENVILLE — East Carolina kept Texas-San Antonio winless in American Conference play with an 88-72 victory in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday night.
The Pirates improved to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in the American as Jordan Riley led five players into double figures with 19 points.
Riley scored the 1,000th point of his two seasons at ECU on a free throw with 17:22 to play. He joined Oliver Mack, Blue Edwards and Jayden Gardner in reaching the milestone in two seasons with the Pirates.
“Jordan is a guy who will do anything to win,” said Isaiah Mbeng on the Pirate radio network. “It shows every single day, whether it’s in practice or games. … He’s a guy you want to be around. He elevates everyone.”
Mbeng had a career high with 18 points. Demitri Gardner scored 15. Eli DeLaurier tallied 13 and Giovanni Emejuru had 12 points that included several dunks.
ECU coach Mike Schwartz emphasized the rebounding effort by the backcourt as the Pirates led, 45-43, on the boards. Emejuru grabbed 12. Mbeng had eight rebounds. Riley controlled six and Gardner had five.
ECU had fewer turnovers, 8-10, and had a 12-5 lead in points off turnovers.
UTSA had an early 9-6 advantage. The Pirates went ahead to stay with a 6-0 run that included baskets by DeLaurier, Riley and Mbeng.
The Roadrunners (4-20, 0-12 American) were paced by 16 points from Daniel Akitoby in their 17th straight loss.
The Pirates won for the third time in five games. It was ECU’s first win at home in league play this season.
The Pirates play at Rice (11-14, 5-7 American) on Saturday at 2 p.m. (ESPN+). The Owls topped ECU, 83-77, in Greenville on Jan. 28 despite a career high 37 points by Riley.
