CHAPEL HILL — Shooting statistics told the story as No. 12 North Carolina took a 99-51 win over visiting East Carolina on Monday night.
The Tar Heels (12-1) made 34 of 63 field goal attempts for 54 percent while ECU (5-8) was limited to 19 of 73 from the floor for 26 percent.
The Pirates made just two of 22 from beyond the arc for 9.1 percent while the Tar Heels were 12 for 25, 48 percent.
ECU made 11 of 17 free throws (64.7 percent) while the hosts made 19 of 30 (63.3 percent).
Giovanni Emejuru dropped two free throws for an initial 2-0 lead for the Pirates, but UNC scored the next 12 points and pulled away.
ECU had 20 offensive rebounds although the Tar Heels won the board battle, 48-42.
“Generally, when you have 20 offensive rebounds, you’ll have like 20 second-chance points,” said visiting coach Mike Schwartz on the Pirate radio network.
ECU had eight second-chance points and more turnovers, 16-12.
Emejuru had 21 points and 14 rebounds, asserting himself in the paint for several powerful dunks.
ECU’s leading scorer, Jordan Riley, was held to 11 points on four for 24 shooting from the field. He was averaging 21.7 points.
Freshman Caleb Wilson had 21 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Henri Veesaar added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Luka Bogavac had 15 points and Seth Trimble tallied 12.
The Pirates will have a break before starting American Conference play at home against Tulane (9-4) on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at noon (ESPNU).
