East Carolina Pirates quarterback Katin Houser plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal in January 2026 for his final year of eligibility, multiple outlets reported Monday. It marked his second transfer since entering the college ranks. He will also opt out of the upcoming Go Bowling Military Bowl against Pittsburgh.
Two of his top targets headed towards the portal with him later in the day. ESPN’S Pete Thamel reported that wide receiver Yannick Smith is entering the portal and Pete Nakos of On3 reported that tight end Jayvontay Conner will test the waters for potential suitors too.
A four-star recruit out of high school, Houser began his career at Michigan State, redshirting in 2022 and appearing in limited action in 2023 before transferring to ECU ahead of the 2024 season.
At ECU, Houser emerged as a top Group of Five quarterback, starting 12 games in 2025 and posting career-best stats: 65.9% completion rate, 3,300 passing yards, 19 TD passes (6 INT), plus 181 rushing yards and 9 rushing TDs.
He helped lead the Pirates to an 8-4 regular-season record (6-2 in AAC), the program’s most wins since 2014.
Smith and Conner were both in the top 5 on the team in receiving yards. Smith was tied for a team-leading 5 touchdown receptions while Conner had three TD catches.
This news comes amid NCAA changes to the transfer portal. The spring window has been eliminated, and the winter window is now shortened to 10 days, running from January 2–16, 2026. Players cannot officially enter until then.
Thanks for sticking with the team for a couple of weeks more to try to win a big bowl game, fellas; you still could’ve entered the portal. I’m sure that the Seniors on the team are especially grateful to you.
If things don’t pan out for you in your next gigs, that’ll be poetic justice.
