BASKETBALL NEWSUNC-Wilmington pulls away from Pirates

WILMINGTON — UNC-Wilmington made 14 of 28 from behind the arc in an 85-60 nonconference win over East Carolina on Tuesday night.

The Seahawks (3-1) took control with a 26-6 run after the Pirates (2-2) had gone ahead, 22-16.

Christian May led UNCW with 22 points, hitting eight of 12 field goal attempts, including six of 10 on threes.

ECU coach Mike Schwartz said the hosts were able to take advantage of the Pirates’ emphasis on defending the paint with their outside shooting.

Jordan Riley led ECU with 19 points. Tybo Bailey added 10.

Corey Caulker tallied nine. Gio Emejuru had seven points in 20 minutes before fouling out. Vito Perkovic also scored seven.

Reid Cason had six rebounds in 20 minutes for the Pirates.

UNCW had a 38-27 advantage on the boards. ECU had fewer turnovers, 10-12.

The Pirates host Charleston Southern (3-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.
