Marcus Monroe is shown with UNC coach Bill Belichick on Saturday.

Tight end Marcus Monroe of North Raleigh Christian recently received offers from North Carolina and N.C. State. He is the oldest son of former East Carolina cornerback Kevin Monroe, who appears on the Bonesville pregame show and provides football game commentary on the Pirate radio network.

Marcus Monroe began his high school career at Green Level and transferred to NRC last year. He had 50 receptions for 792 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024 as the Knights went 5-6.

He had 19 catches for 237 yards and two scores this season before sustaining a partial meniscus tear that prompted surgery. Monroe committed to Stanford early in his senior year and the Cardinal confirmed the offer during a campus visit for the Boston College game on Sept. 13.

Marcus Monroe (6-4, 220) received an offer from UNC on Saturday as he attended the Virginia game in Chapel Hill and the Wolfpack followed suit Monday.

Monroe is in his fourth week of rehab following surgery five weeks ago. He is expected to be off crutches in another week. A full recovery is anticipated.

Monroe’s grandfather, James Monroe, is an ECU graduate, as is Marcus’ mom, Rasheeda. Kevin Monroe was a captain on the 1999 team that went 9-3 with wins over West Virginia, South Carolina, Miami of Florida and N.C. State. His Mom graduated from the Brody School of Medicine.

Marcus Monroe would like to study business. James and Kevin both have MBAs. James coached at Greene Central. Players under his tutelage included Pirates Antwane Yelverton and Cliff Godwin.

The Monroes have communicated with ECU in the recruiting process. The Pirates aren’t planning to sign a tight end with the next recruiting class as junior Desirrio Riles and sophomore Jayvontay Conner have been performing well.

That could change in the musical chairs that precede signing day and the roster rebuilds that take place on an annual basis.

Marcus Monroe’s younger brother, Derek “Butter” Monroe, is a developing talent at Green Level as a freshman.

Derek Monroe is playing offense, defense and special teams for the Gators. He returned a punt for a touchdown in his first varsity game, a 34-20 win at Athens Drive. He has 25 catches for 295 yards with a score. He had an interception last week.
