WICHITA — An outfield error put the leadoff man at second base in the bottom of the ninth and Wichita State capitalized with a walk-off single through the left side by Jaden Gustafson for an 8-7 win over East Carolina on Sunday.

The Shockers took the American Athletic Conference series, 2-1.

ECU slipped to 27-21 overall and 11-10 in the AAC going into a league series at home with Texas San Antonio (37-10, 18-3 AAC) beginning Friday at 6 p.m.

Trailing 7-3, the Pirates plated four runs in the seventh to tie the score at 7. Drew Downs was hit by a pitch and Alex Bouche singled through the left side to get the frame started.

Braden Burress singled to center to load the bases. Downs scored on a fielder’s choice by Jack Herring and Bouche came home on a throwing error on the play to get ECU within, 7-5.

Dixon Williams had a single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Herring scored on a ground out by Colby Wallace. Austin Irby brought Williams in with the tying run on a single to center.

A sacrifice fly by Williams gave ECU a 1-0 lead in the first. Josh Livington tied the score in the third with an RBI double. The Pirates retook the lead in the fourth as Walker Barron singled to drive in Wallace, who had singled and moved to second on a hit by Irby.

Kam Durnin had a rare 2-run sacrifice fly for the hosts in a 5-run fourth inning.

Bradley Zayac (1-2) was the tough luck loser after holding the Shockers scoreless for three innings. Nick Potter, who threw a 100-mile per hour pitch, moved to 2-1 with the win.

The Shockers improved to 15-31 and 7-14 in the AAC.

Bouche had a solo homer in the fifth.
