WICHITA —Ethan Norby was dominant for seven and two-thirds innings before Colby Wallace closed the door for East Carolina in a 6-1 American Athletic Conference win at Wichita State on Saturday.
Norby (6-4) was perfect through five innings as the Pirates (27-20, 11-9 AAC) evened the series at 1-1 with the deciding game Sunday at 2 p.m.
The sophomore left-hander was scheduled to start Friday, when the Shockers took a 5-4 win, but he was feeling ill, according to Chip Welch of ECU athletic media relations.
Norby allowed three hits and one earned run Saturday with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Wallace got an inning-ending strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the eighth. Wallace gave himself an insurance run in the ninth with a solo homer to left before picking up his third save.
The blast, his 10th of the season, knocked out the function of a section of the scoreboard.
The Pirates never trailed after Ryley Johnson’s RBI single in the third provided a 1-0 lead. Dixon Williams scored an unearned run in the fourth on a ground out by Walker Barron.
Williams had an RBI double and Wallace brought in a run on a ground out in the fifth for a 4-0 ECU advantage.
Jack Herring’s single up the middle scored Johnson for a 5-0 lead in the eighth.
Wichita State (14-31, 6-14 AAC) got on the board in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Davis Mauzy.
ECU had a 15-4 lead in hits as Braden Burress and Alex Bouche each had three. Getting two hits apiece for the Pirates were Johnson, Williams and Wallace.
