ELON — East Carolina held Elon scoreless over the last seven innings for a 4-2 nonconference road win on Tuesday night.
Bradley Zayac, Jackson DiLorenzo (3-1) and Brad Pruett combined to limit the Phoenix to four hits and one earned run with two walks and 11 strikeouts over nine innings.
“Our pitching was great,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “Zay (Zayac) had a little tough luck. Those balls weren’t hit extremely hard in the inning he gave up two (runs). Zayac was tremendous.
“DiLo was tremendous. Pruett was tremendous. Colby Wallace (third base) was awesome defensively. We did enough offensively to win the game.”
Alex Bouche bunted home a run in the top of the second and Braden Burress had an RBI double later in the frame for a 2-0 Pirates lead.
Elon (19-25) got a pair of runs in the second on a fielder’s choice and an error.
ECU got the go-ahead run in the fifth as a single up the middle by John Collins brought in Wallace.
The Pirates added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Austin Irby.
Dixon Williams (double) and Irby each had two hits for the Pirates.
ECU (26-19) returns to American Athletic Conference play at Wichita State (13-30) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Pirates are 10-8 in league play while the Shockers are 5-13.
