GREENVILLE — Tulane scored runs at an amazing rate for five innings on Friday night in a 20-5 American Athletic Conference win in seven innings at East Carolina.
The Green Wave (25-17, 9-7 AAC) took a 9-0 lead in the top of the first as Matthias Haas, Kaikea Harrison, Gavin Schulz (double) and Connor Rasmussen each had 2-run hits.
A hit batter and a walk with the bases loaded accounted for two of Tulane’s three runs in the third.
Seven Pirate pitchers combined for nine walks and four hit batters.
Schulz had a 2-run homer in the fourth. The 6-run fifth included a grand slam by Michael Lombardi and a solo shot by Harrison.
Nick Parham broke up a shutout bid by Luc Fladda (3-4) in the fifth with a solo homer to right center. The Pirates added a 3-run homer by Dixon Williams and a solo shot by Michael Kalinich to draw within 20-5 in the fifth.
Talor Grubbs held the visitors scoreless over the last two frames. Brad Pruett (3-4) started and was charged with the loss. Ethan Norby, often the Friday night starter, followed Pruett to the mound in the first and got the final out of the inning before he was replaced in the second.
Pruett yielded six hits and nine runs (all earned) in two-thirds of an inning.
Fladda turned in a complete game for the visitors with no walks and three strikeouts. He hit two batters.
Tulane had a 14-7 lead in hits. Jack Herring went 2-for-2 for the Pirates.
