BIRMINGHAM — East Carolina’s 4-game winning streak was halted on Saturday as Alabama-Birmingham pounded out 21 hits in a 16-9 American Athletic Conference win.
The Blazers overcame a 5-0 deficit to improve to 20-20 overall and 5-10 in league play. ECU (24-17, 9-6 AAC) visits N.C. State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Wolfpack took 26-12 record into a Saturday game at Cal.
State topped ECU, 4-1, in Greenville on April 8.
The Pirates won the series at UAB, 2-1, and looked to be headed for a sweep after taking a 4-0 lead in the top of the first with a 3-run double by Austin Irby.
Irby added a 2-run homer in a 3-run third that extended the lead to 8-1.
The contest pivoted during an offensive surge by the hosts that included four runs in the third, five in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Hayslip had a 2-run homer in the third and a grand slam in the fifth.
Irby had a solo homer in the fourth.
The Blazers hit six home runs for the day. Every UAB player in the lineup had at least one hit.
ECU used 10 pitchers. Jackson DiLorenzo (2-1) was charged with the loss.
Isaac Warrick (3-2) got the win and Cole Cheatham picked up his first save.
The Pirates had 13 hits as Jack Herring and Irby had three each. Braden Burress and John Collins each had two hits.
