BIRMINGHAM — Braden Burress, Dixon Williams and Austin Irby led East Carolina offensively in a 5-3 American Athletic Conference win at Alabama-Birmingham on Friday night as the Pirates clinched the series.
Burress went 4-for-5 and scored three runs. Williams had two hits and two RBIs. Irby hit a 2-run double down the left field line for a 3-1 lead in the sixth and ECU stayed ahead the rest of the way.
The Pirates improved to 24-16 overall and 9-5 in the AAC with their fourth straight win. UAB (19-20, 4-10 AAC) tries to avoid a sweep on Saturday at 2 p.m. (ESPN+).
Williams singled up the middle to score Burress for a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Blazers tied the score at 1 in the fifth on a solo homer to right by Landon Beaver.
Williams got an RBI in the seventh on a fielder’s choice.
Beaver, who hadn’t hit a homer before Friday night, blasted his second of the game, a 2-run shot to right, in the bottom of the seventh.
The Pirates got an insurance run in the ninth after Burress led off with a single and Kenan Bowman had a hit. Burress went to third on a double play. He scored on a passed ball.
Brad Pruett (3-3) started and went six and one-third innings. His line included two hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and three strikeouts.
Jake Hunter went the last two and two-thirds for his second save. He yielded one hit with no runs, no walks and four strikeouts.
