WILMINGTON — Alex Bouche hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning to send East Carolina to a 10-6 nonconference win at UNC Wilmington on Tuesday night.
The Pirates scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed in improving to 19-10 although the Seahawks (14-15) pulled even at 6 on a 2-run homer by Ryker Galaska in the eighth.
ECU was topped, 9-4, by UNCW in Fayetteville on March 18. The deciding game of the regular season series is scheduled for April 15 in Greenville.
Walks to Walker Barron, Michael Kalinich and Kenan Bowman set the table for Bouche’s decisive opposite field blast to right center off Cyle Phelan (1-2).
Ethan Young (3-0) pitched the last four innings for the Pirates, allowing three hits and two runs (both earned) with no walks and four strikeouts.
ECU’s 4-run first inning included sacrifice flies by Ryley Johnson and Barron, an RBI double by Austin Irby and a run-scoring single by Bowman, who went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
“I challenged our guys to be ready to go tonight,” said Coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “I really wanted to see some competitiveness in a hostile environment. I didn’t really feel like we showed up to play in Fayetteville a couple of weeks ago.”
Bouche had a run-scoring double in the fifth and finished with five RBIs.
Mac Gillespie had a 2-run homer for the Seahawks in the sixth.
ECU hosts Elon (10-17) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
