GREENVILLE — East Carolina took both ends of a doubleheader with William & Mary at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday to complete a sweep of a 3-game series with the Tribe.
The Pirates are 12-8 with five straight wins going into a contest with UNC-Wilmington (10-10) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville.
ECU scored 13 runs in the first inning of the first game Saturday and took a 19-6 triumph in seven innings.
The Pirates prevailed, 9-8, in the second game to wrap up the series after scoring six runs in the opening frame.
The mammoth first inning in the first game included a grand slam by Braden Burress and a 3-run homer by Colby Wallace. Walker Barron had a 2-run double to get the scoring started and Wallace had a single for two RBIs.
ECU expanded the lead to 17-0 in the second on 2-run homers by Alex Peltier and Jack Herring.
“With the wind blowing out, it was definitely an offensive day,” said coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “It made it hard on pitchers, but our guys put some good swings on the baseball and were able to drive in some runs.”
Ian White Jr. (2-0) came in for ECU starter Sean Jenkins to get the final out in a 5-run third for William & Mary and White was credited with the win.
Ethan Young (2-0), a right-handed junior college transfer, went four and one-third innings with 10 strikeouts for the win in the second game and the versatile Wallace protected a 1-run lead for his first save.
Wallace had a grand slam in the first inning of the second game. He went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs. Alex Bouche went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Burress and Dixon Williams each had two hits.
After the Tribe tied the score with six runs in the second inning, the Pirates went ahead to stay with a run on a throwing error in the bottom of the second.
ECU outhit the visitors, 15-12, in the second game.
