FORT WORTH — East Carolina outscored Texas-San Antonio, 8-2, in the final minute for a 70-65 win in the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday night.
The Pirates (19-13) will take on Alabama-Birmingham (20-11) in the quarterfinals Friday night (ESPNU). Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
R.J. Felton hit a jumper in the paint to put ECU ahead to stay, at 64-63, with 55 seconds to go.
The Pirates closed out the contest with four free throws and a dunk by Jayshayne Woodard for their third victory of the season over the Roadrunners (12-19).
Jordan Riley paced ECU with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
“We have a strong mental toughness where we believe we can do anything,” Riley said. “I just feel like we’re going to make plays.”
Felton scored 17. Cam Hayes had 16 points and four assists. C.J. Walker finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Pirates had a 45-40 advantage on the boards.
UTSA was led by Marcus Millender with 24 points. Primo Spears scored 19 for the Roadrunners and Damari Monsanto added 17. Jonnivius Smith had 14 rebounds.
