GREENVILLE — Austin Irby hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to conclude a 13-1 mercy rule win for East Carolina over Indiana State in the Keith LeClair Classic on Saturday.
The Pirates (4-6) take on Virginia Tech (8-2) on Sunday at 3 :30 p.m. The Hokies improved to 2-0 in the Classic with a 7-2 win on Saturday over Kent State, which had topped the Pirates, 7-6, on Friday.
“A good bounce-back win after last night,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network.
Already up, 2-0, ECU took control with a 6-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a 2-run homer from John Collins.
Dixon Williams went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI for the Pirates. Irby had two hits, three runs and drove in four. Colby Wallace had a pair of RBIs.
Collins had three RBIs and Walker Barron had two. Alex Peltier scored two runs.
“Up and down the lineup, guys did a good job,” Godwin said.
Freshman right-hander Sean Jenkins (1-0) started and went six innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
“That’s what we need from him,” Godwin said.
Freshman lefty Gabe Beschloss tossed a scoreless seventh.
