GREENVILLE — Old Dominion transfer Alex Bouche hit a walk-off home run to right field for a 4-3 East Carolina win over George Mason on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium in the deciding matchup of a 3-game series.
Bouche is one of 27 new players on the roster.
“We’re going to keep putting these guys out there and let them get swings,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “Good things will happen.”
Bouche led off the bottom of the ninth and connected on an 0-2 pitch from Cole Egan (0-1).
The blast made a winner out of Jackson DiLorenzo (1-0), who stranded two runners after a pair of walks in the ninth.
The Pirates battled from behind for much of the way after the Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the first and extended the advantage to 3-0 in the fourth on a solo shot by James Quinn-Irons — the lone hit for the visitors.
ECU got an unearned run in the fifth and Colby Wallace came home on a double play in the sixth after his leadoff double.
Freshman Alex Peltier tied the score at 3 with a homer for the Pirates in the seventh.
Freshman right-hander Sean Jenkins went five and one-third innings for the Pirates. He yielded the only hit and all three runs although only one was earned.
Jake Hunter turned in a scoreless inning in his first action since he was shelved with an arm ailment in April last season.’
Peltier filled in for injured Ryley Johnson in center field and went 2-for-3 as ECU outhit the Patriots, 8-1.
The Pirates will visit Campbell on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Camels are playing a series at No. 22 Cal-Santa Barbara to open the season.
How long will Ryley be out?
