SAN ANTONIO — East Carolina overcame a 4-point deficit with under 20 seconds left to take an 80-79 American Athletic Conference win at Texas-San Antonio on Saturday night.
C.J. Walker had 28 points for the Pirates, including the game winner on a tightly contested turnaround jumper in the lane with four seconds left.
Jordan Riley’s 3-point play with 17 seconds left after a steal by Trevion Labeaux cut UTSA’s lead to 79-78.
Walker got a steal out of a trap in the backcourt and ECU called time to set up Hunter’s winning shot. Cam Hayes had the assist.
“We were going to him,” said Coach Mike Schwartz on the Pirate radio network. “He was like the mail man. He delivered.”
Walker made nine of 15 field goal attempts and dropped 10 of 12 free throws.
ECU made 26 of 33 at the line compared to seven of 10 for the hosts.
Riley hit 13 of 16 free throws as he scored 21 points. R.J. Felton was four for seven from beyond the arc as he had 15 points.
Walker had 10 rebounds as the Pirates had a 32-31 lead on the boards. The Roadrunners had fewer turnovers, 8-9.
ECU improved to 13-11 overall and 5-6 in the AAC with 47.1 percent (24 for 51) field goal shooting.
Marcus Millender led UTSA (10-13, 4-7) with 21 points.
The hosts had a 40-33 lead at the half.
The Pirates will be back in Greenville to take on Alabama-Birmingham (15-8, 8-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. (ESPNU).
