GREENVILLE — Rice ended a 7-game losing streak with a 73-60 American Athletic Conference win at East Carolina on Tuesday night as the Pirates made just two of 18 shots from behind the arc, 11.1 percent, and were outrebounded, 43-32.
“We’re going to keep fighting, but we can’t play 40 minutes like that,” said ECU coach Mike Schwartz on the Pirate radio network. “Playing seven or eight guys, it’s not realistic to be trapping all game long.”
ECU had to play from behind as the Owls (12-11, 3-7 AAC) went ahead to stay at 22-21 on a 3-pointer by Trae Broadnax with 3:18 left in the first half.
Rice had its biggest lead at 58-35 with 10:11 remaining.
ECU slipped to 12-11 overall and 4-6 in league play despite 23 points from C.J. Walker and 14 from R.J. Felton.
Rice was led by 18 points and 10 rebounds from Caden Powell. Alem Husienovic added 11 points for the visitors.
“We couldn’t handle their big fella, Caden Powell,” Schwartz said. ” … We were not able to make a presence on the offensive glass and when you don’t make a presence on the offensive glass and you shoot (37.9) percent from the floor, two for 18 from three — and can’t get some of those back — that’s difficult.”
The Owls trimmed ECU’s all-time lead in the series to 9-8.
The Pirates continue AAC play at Texas-San Antonio on Saturday at 8 p.m. (ESPNU).
The Roadrunners (10-12, 4-6 AAC) were topped, 61-60, at home by Tulane on Wednesday night after leading, 60-51, with 2:10 to go.
