PHILADELPHIA — Temple never led during regulation play on Saturday but held the upper hand for the rest of overtime after a 3-pointer by Steve Settle 21 seconds into the extra period in a 98-94 American Athletic Conference win over East Carolina at the Liacouras Center.
A 3-game ECU winning streak was halted despite a career high 33 points from C.J. Walker.
The Pirates (12-10, 4-5 AAC) had their largest lead at 28-18 with six minutes left in the first half and were on top, 76-70, after two free throws by Temple transfer Jordan Riley with 1:57 to go in regulation.
Settle tied the score at 76 with a three from Settle with 1:06 left in the second half. ECU had the last possession in regulation but R.J. Felton missed a jumper at the buzzer.
Temple (14-8, 6-3 AAC) got 32 points from Jamal Mashburn Jr. Settle scored seven points in the extra five minutes and Mashburn tallied six.
Felton had 19 points, Riley scored 13 and Trevion LaBeaux added nine for the Pirates. Riley and LaBeaux each had four assists.
ECU coach Mike Schwartz cited free throw shooting as a factor. The Owls did not get to the line in the first half but hit 25 of 32 free throws after halftime.
The Pirates had a 36-25 rebounding advantage as Felton pulled down 12. The Owls had fewer turnovers, 8-11.
All of Temple’s scorers reached double figures including Quante Berry (21), Zion Stanford (19), Settle (16) and Elijah Gray (10).
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at home against Rice (11-10, 2-6 AAC), which has a matchup on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Houston with No. 19 Memphis.
