GREENVILLE —The home team has been dominant in the recent history of the East Carolina-UNC Wilmington basketball series but the supportive environs of Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum did not deter the Seahawks on Tuesday night.
UNCW (6-2) took a 67-53 win to become the first road team to prevail in the last nine games of the series. The Seahawks have a 39-31 overall lead in the series.
ECU slipped to 5-1 at home this season.
The Pirates took an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes and had a 16-15 advantage before Donovan Newby hit a pull-up jumper to put the visitors ahead to stay at 17-16 with 7:30 left in the first half.
“Turnovers in the paint and at the basket was kind of the story of the game for us,” said ECU coach Mike Shwartz on the Pirate radio network.
The Pirates (7-2) had more turnovers, 16-13, and were outrebounded, 35-30.
UNCW had a 34-28 lead at the half. ECU trailed, 54-41, before an 8-0 run trimmed the deficit to five points, at 54-49, with 9:23 left. The Seahawks responded with an 11-0 spree to take control as the Pirates were scoreless for over eight minutes — until the 57-second mark.
C.J. Walker had 16 points for ECU and Jordan Riley added 14. R.J. Felton was limited to three points, well below his 21.3 average.
Newby and Harlan Obioha had 12 points each for UNCW.
The Pirates play at South Carolina (5-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
