GREENVILLE — East Carolina improved to 4-0 with a 78-77 double-overtime win over George Mason in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday as R.J. Felton had 27 points and eight rebounds.
Jordan Riley had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates. C.J. Walker provided 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Jayshayne Woodard scored11 and Cam Hayes added 10 points.
Walker hit a free throw with 39 seconds left in the second extra period to put the Pirates ahead, 78-77. Woodard latched onto a defensive rebound with four seconds to go.
ECU had a 48-38 rebounding advantage and had fewer turnovers, 14-19.
The hosts made 24 of 71 field goal attempts for 33.8 percent, compared to 26 of 60 for GMU, 43.3 percent.
ECU was seven for 31 from beyond the arc (22.6 percent) and 23 of 32 at the line (71.9 percent). The visitors were six of 22 on threes (27.3 percent) and 19 of 25 on free throws (76 percent).
The contest lasted two hours, 46 minutes and was witnessed by a crowd of 3,916.
The Patriots (2-3) were paced by Darius Maddox with 20 points.
The Pirates rallied from a 53-48 deficit with 7:16 left in regulation.
Felton drove and scored with 10 seconds left to tie the score at 61 and bring on the first overtime.
The first extra period ended, 67-67, with no scoring over the final 53 seconds. Woodard had a steal with two seconds to go.
Next up for ECU is three games in three days in the Boardwalk Battle in Daytona Beach, starting with a matchup against Jacksonville State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Alabama-based Gamecocks are 2-1 going into a contest at Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m.
George Mason took an 81-59 win at home against the Pirates last season.
