MEMPHIS — Trey Yesavage narrowly missed a no-hitter as No. 7 East Carolina took a 14-0 American Athletic Conference win in seven innings at Memphis on Friday night.
Yesavage (9-1) went six and two-thirds before yielding a single through the left side by Daunte Stuart for the Tigers’ only hit. The hosts left the bases loaded on their final turn at the plate as Jackson DiLorenzo posted a game-ending strikeout.
The win put the Pirates at 33-8 overall and 12-4 in the AAC, assuring that ECU would have at least a share of first in the league standings at the end of the night with Texas San Antonio, which began the weekend at 11-4 in the AAC, playing a series at Rice.
Jacob Starling, who hit for a cycle on Tuesday night in a 10-6 win over N.C. State in Greenville, got the scoring underway with a solo homer to left center to start a 7-run second inning.
The big frame continued with RBI singles from Justin Wilcoxen and Joey Berini before Ryley Johnson connected for a 2-run double and a 5-0 lead.
Carter Cunningham had a run-scoring double and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had an RBI single.
Yesavage walked two and struck out 12.
The Pirates continued to build the lead as Cunningham had a 2-run homer in the fourth and Jenkins-Cowart launched a 2-run shot in the seventh.
ECU goes for its seventh straight win on Saturday at 5 p.m. against the Tigers (18-24, 6-10 AAC), who have lost six in a row.
