GREENVILLE — No. 9 East Carolina overcame a pair of deficits to complete an American Athletic Conference sweep of Wichita State at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday.
The Pirates (31-8, 11-4 AAC) trailed, 7-0, in the first game of a doubleheader before rallying for an 11-7 win. ECU won the second game, 11-4, after the Shockers (21-20, 7-8 AAC) had taken a 3-0 lead.
The Pirates moved a half-game ahead of Texas-San Antonio in the league standings as the Roadrunners improved to 10-4 in the AAC with a 7-5 win over visiting Alabama-Birmingham. The Blazers and UTSA play the third game of the series on Sunday at 11 a.m., Eastern time
Dayvin Johnson;s grand slam was the big blow for Wichita State in a 7-run third inning in the first game on Saturday.
ECU got five runs back in the bottom of the third with the help of a 3-run homer by Justin Wilcoxen.
“All five runs came with two outs,” noted ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network. “We just battled. The crowd got into it. … Our guys just kept going. (Zach) Root was great after the 7-spot. He put up two zeroes.”
ECU took the lead on a 2-run homer by Joey Berini in the fifth. Wilcoxen added a 2-run homer in the sixth.
Root (6-0) went five innings for the win, Danny Beal held the visitors scoreless for three innings before Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
An error and a balk helped the Shockers to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game.
Berini’s 3-run homer to right to right tied the score in the fourth. Berini had an RBI single to give the Pirates the lead in a 3-run fifth. Colby Wallace drove in two runs with a single to right center.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had a 2-run double as ECU scored four times in the seventh.
Cam Clonch hit a solo homer for the Pirates’ 11th run in the eighth.
Aaron Groller (2-0) got the win in relief.
The Pirates will take the momentum of a 4-game winning streak into a home game with N.C. State (22-15) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
