GREENVILLE — Brandon Johnson had 16 points and 15 rebounds for East Carolina in a 60-49 nonconference win over High Point in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday night.

ECU (9-4) never trailed, going ahead to stay at 7-5 as Ezra Ausar finished a fast break with 14:46 left in the first half.

The Pirates expanded the advantage to 32-18 at the half and held their biggest lead at 60-41 with 5:40 left to play.

The Panthers (8-4) were averaging 85 points per game and were held to their lowest output of the season by 19 points.

ECU’s defensive effort limited High Point to 26.6 percent field goal shooting (17 for 64), including two of 25 from behind the arc (8 percent).

Ausar had 15 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes before fouling out.

Javon Small finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. R.J. Felton had six points and eight rebounds as the Pirates had a 55-44 lead on the boards.

ECU had a 12-8 lead in steals.

The Pirates open American Athletic Conference play at home against Temple (6-7) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (ESPN+).
