GREENVILLE — R. J. Felton scored 25 points as East Carolina snapped a 2-game losing streak with a 79-69 nonconference win over Campbell in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Friday night.
Felton hit nine of 14 field goal tries, including seven of 10 behind the arc, as ECU improved to 6-3 going into a game Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at UNC-Wilmington (6-3).
The Pirates closed the first half on a 17-2 run to lead, 41-26, at the break.
Brandon Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Pirates extended their lead in the series to 34-10 dating back to 1977-78 when the Camels joined NCAA Division I. The first meeting between the programs came during the 1931-32 season.
Jaden Walker had 13 points in the win and Ezra Ausar added 10 points.
Javon Small was 0 for 5 from the floor but made all nine of his free throws in contributing nine points and 11 assists. Kalib LaCount scored six points.
ECU made 26 of 56 from the field (46.4 percent), including 12 of 27 behind the arc (44.4 percent). The Pirates dropped 15 of 17 free throws for 88.2 percent.
ECU held a 38-28 lead on the boards..
Joshua Lusane led the Camels (4-4) with 16 points.
ECU’s largest lead was 67-45 with 6:48 to go. Campbell had a 22-6 run to get within six points with 50 seconds left.
“A good win against a good team,” said Pirates coach Michael Schwartz. “I have a ton of respect for Campbell’s players and coaches. … Our guys came in with a very good mindset.”
