GREENVILLE — East Carolina overcame a 25-16 deficit with 4:31 left in the first half to defeat Gardner-Webb, 62-52, on Saturday at Williams Arena in Minges Coliseum.
“The second half, we did a better job,” said Pirates coach Joe Dooley after ECU improved to 7-2 with its third straight win. “We got downhill a little bit more and made some easier plays.”
The Pirates went ahead to stay at 33-31 on a 3-pointer by J.J. Miles with 16:58 to play.
Miles hit five of nine from beyond the arc and led all scorers with 15 points. Tristen Newton and Brandon Suggs scored 12 points each in the win.
Ludgy Debaut had 11 rebounds for ECU, which trailed, 19-17, on the boards after 20 minutes before finishing with a 41-32 advantage.
Newton had four assists and three steals.
The Bulldogs (4-4) got 12 points from Jordan Sears and 11 from Lance Terry.
The Pirates went 6-for-6 at the line in the last 1:18 when the visitors began fouling to stop the clock. Newton dropped four in that span.
