WICHITA, KS — Wichita State threatened to make the fourth game in its American Athletic Conference series with East Carolina another blowout with an 11-3 lead after four innings.
The Shockers had to withstand a comeback by the Pirates for an 11-9 win and a 2-2 series split.
ECU (30-9, 12-4 AAC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a 2-run double by Zach Agnos, but the hosts responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning and led the remainder of the game.
Agnos homered to center in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-3.
After three Pirate pitchers had allowed 11 runs (nine earned) in three and two-thirds innings, Cam Colmore came in to hold the Shockers (22-17, 10-9) scoreless the rest of the way.
Colmore allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three.
Josh Moylan had a 2-run homer in the fifth as ECU pulled within 11-5. A pair of unearned runs in the sixth closed the gap to 11-7.
After Seth Caddell’s 2-run homer in the seventh, Wichita State brought in Aaron Haase, who kept the Pirates off the scoreboard for his eighth save.
ECU held a 13-12 edge in hits as Moylan went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Agnos finished 2-for-4 and also drove in three runs. Caddell went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Thomas Francisco was 2-for-5 with a double. Ryley Johnsion came off the bench to go 2-for-3.
The Pirates host Tulane (24-14, 13-2) for a 4-game series that begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m.
