WICHITA, KS — East Carolina and host Wichita State split an American Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday with each team winning in seven innings by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule.
Gavin Williams of the Pirates improved to 6-0 as ECU prevailed 10-0 in the first game. The Shockers bounced back with a 12-2 win in the second game.’
Williams allowed five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in the opener..
Thomas Francisco, Zach Agnos and Bryson Worrell hit home runs for the Pirates in the first game. Agnos had two hits, two runs and three RBIs.
Francisco had two runs, two hits and two RBIs. Worrell finished with three hits, one run and two RBIs.
The Shockers closed out the second game with eight runs in the seventh inning as Hunter Gibson had a two-run triple and Chuck Ingram hit a 3-run homer.
The Shockers (20-16, 8-8 AAC) got a complete game from Jace Kaminska (5-0) in the second game. He yielded five hits and two walks while fanning five.
Jake Kuchmaner (2-2) was charged with the loss as ECU slipped to 29-8 overall and 11-3 in the AAC.
An RBI single by Worrell and a sacrifice bunt by Ben Newton accounted for ECU’s runs in the second game.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.
