GREENVILLE — East Carolina posted its fourth weekend sweep of the 2021 season with an 11-8 win over Illinois State at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Sunday.
Carson Whisenhunt improved to 4-0, C.J. Mayhue recorded his fourth save and the Pirates (16-3) got home runs from Seth Caddell and Bryson Worrell.
ECU is 5-0 in Sunday games this year.
Whisenhunt struggled at the outset as the Redbirds (5-12) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Pirates responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and led the rest of the way. A walk to Zach Agnos, a single by Thomas Francisco and a walk to Caddell loaded the bases with one out. With two down, Worrell reached on an error and two runs scored. Josh Moylan doubled to left center to bring in two more runs.
Francisco had an RBI single in the second, Worrell hit a solo homer to left in the third and Caddell had a 3-run blast to left in the fourth for a 9-3 lead.
Illinois State scored four unearned runs in the sixth to pull within 9-8.
ECU extended its lead to 11-8 in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring doubles by Caddell and Alec Makarewicz.
Caddell finished with four RBIs.
Whisenhunt fanned five in five innings. After relief stints by Carter Spivey and Matt Bridges, Mayhue pitched the last three innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out four.
The Pirates visit North Carolina on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
