WILMINGTON — UNC-Wilmington ended East Carolina’s 7-game winning streak by downing the Pirates, 10-2, on Wednesday night.
ECU (13-3) had surged into the Top 10 nationally in multiple polls before being outhit, 17-5. The hosts scored all of their runs after the Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Thomas Francisco had an RBI single in the top of the first and ECU led 2-0 after a run scored on a double play later in the opening frame.
Cole Weiss had an RBI single and Matt Suggs had a run-scoring double as UNCW (11-3) tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the first.
The Seahawks went ahead to stay on an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the second by Taber Mongero.
A 2-run homer by Kip Brandenburg was the big blow in a 4-run fifth inning.
Jacob Shafer (1-0) started and went five innings for the win. He yielded all five hits by the Pirates while striking out two without a walk.
Leadoff batter Brooks Baldwin was 4-for-4 with a double for UNCW.
ECU starts a 3-game series at home against Illinois State on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
