East Carolina will open its home basketball slate today against N.C. Wesleyan.
The Pirates (1-0) will tip off against the Division III Battling Bishops (0-2) at 5 p.m. in a game hastily arranged after four of the Pirates’ first five scheduled contests were cancelled due to COVID-19 issues.
The matchup with Wesleyan will be played with no fans present in keeping with an announcement by school officials that it will begin its basketball season without spectators in attendance.
ECU was scheduled to play Belmont-Abbey in the 49ers Classic in Charlotte on Saturday but the contest was called off due to coronavirus issues with the Crusaders. The Pirates won their season opener over host Charlotte, 66-57, on Friday.
Earlier the Pirates had pulled out of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, FL, after COVID issues arose with one or more of the other teams in the event. The Showcase, involving ECU, Indiana State, Austin Peay and Omaha, had been scheduled for Nov. 25-27.
Before the latest scheduling adjustment, the Pirates’ first home game had been set for Saturday, Dec. 5, against Radford.
