GREENVILLE — Coppin State closed the first half with a 13-3 run to lead 39-31 at the break and the Eagles protected the advantage over the last 20 minutes for an 85-75 nonconference win at East Carolina on Tuesday night.
Coppin State improved to 4-6 while the Pirates slipped to 2-7 going into exam break.
Jayden Gardner had 22 points for ECU on eight of 14 field goal shooting. Gardner made six of nine at the line.
The Eagles sank 31 of 61 shots from the floor (50.8 percent), 10 of 29 beyond the arc (34.5 percent) and 13 of 16 free throws (81.3 percent)/
The Pirates made 27 of 72 field goal attempts (37.6 percent), seven of 30 from behind the arc (23.3 percent) and 14 of 23 free throws (60.9 percent).
Tyrie Jackson had 12 points in ECU’s fourth straight loss. Brandon Suggs and Tremont Robinson-White added 10 points each for the Pirates. Charles Coleman had eight points in the setback.
Koby Thomas paced Coppin State with 19 points.
ECU had a 38-32 rebounding advantage as Gardner grabbed eight, Jackson controlled seven and Coleman pulled down six.
Robinson-White had four assists before fouling out.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m. against Campbell (6-2).
